Castle Campbell was
the stronghold of the Campbell Earls of Argyll for
centuries Archibald, fourth
Earl of Argyll, fought the English at the Battle of Pinkie
in 1547 and at the siege of Haddington a year later. In 1563
Mary Queen of Scots stayed at the castle to attend the
wedding of the fifth Earl's sister to James Stewart,Lord
Doune. This picture is

- nine different images , RUSSIA'S super-rich elite is being targeted as the
Scottish national tourism agency's top-value growth
market. Well-heeled Russian tourists are the biggest spenders per
person, with the exception of a statistically marginal
number of Saudi Arabians (see graph), VisitScotland has
appointed a Russian national to head a drive to reach
consumers directly, and to open routes to Scotland through
the Russian travel industry. Accompanied by representatives of the Scottish hotels
industry, VisitScotland personnel last week attended the
Moscow International Travel Trade Show, which attracts about
98,000 visitors. Along with other growth markets including central and
eastern Europe, Russia has been identified as playing a
crucial part in reaching the Scottish Executive's target of
a 50 per cent increase in tourism income by 2015. "We are targeting the Russians who can afford anything -
money is really no object for them," said Annabel Kohler,
VisitScotland's head of marketing for Germany, central and
eastern Europe. She added: "Even if they are not that numerous, they are
important opinion leaders, with a lot of influence. They
tend to be educated people with an informed interest in
Scotland. If we can get them in now, then we are confident
that the growing middle class will follow." In 2004, the last year for which break-down figures are
available, 22,000 Russian visitors spent £16m in
Scotland, an average of £727 for every man, woman and
child. VisitScotland intends to maximise the already steep
growth in Russian visitor numbers by marketing directly to
them in the luxury press. The agency has linked up with
VisitBritain and VisitLondon to target potential tourists,
with glossy inserts in magazines read by the wealthy. Kohler said: "All of our feedback from hotels like the
Balmoral and Gleneagles and the likes of the Royal Scotsman
is that we are seeing a huge increase in Russian
visitors. "It has also been noticed that they spend a lot of money
on whisky. There are stories of Russian customers simply
demanding the most expensive bottle in the shop. "What they love are the five-star hotels, the golf,
shooting and deer-stalking, though they are interested in
watching wildlife as well as killing it.""The new class of
Russian traveller wants destinations off the beaten
track. "They are great clients because although they demand a
lot they will pay a lot. There is no way you can cheat them
or not provide something they want. They will say 'no, we
want this, please get it'.""Interest in Scotland is growing
rapidly and I expect the line on the graph to rise
significantly. Our job is to educate the travel trade to
make sure they have a product to offer."
